Lefkas Island
The island of Lefkas is situated in the centre of the main Ionian Islands. Because of the fact that it is the
only island connected to the mainland, it is easily accessible by road and that makes it one of the more
visited places within Greece. With the newly redone airport Preveza being a 30 minute drive from the
island, travelling by air is also one of the more viable options when visiting this idyllic vacationing spot.
However, most prefer to explore and discover the area by boat to grasp the whole experience.
The island’s main resorts take up the east coast of it. Nidri, being a former fishing village, is the biggest
settlement. Today, it has combined all the best of the modern and traditional – sailboats join the fishing
boats off the sandy shore, and family friendly restaurants, cafes, and bars have opened up alongside
authentic fish taverns. About 7 miles north, Nikiana is almost the same, but on a smaller scale.
The island itself, together with its surroundings, has a variety of things to offer. Numerous activities such
as sailing, windsurfing, cycling or scuba-diving are just a thought away from doing on this beautiful and
active island. On the other hand, if prefer to have a more relaxed holiday, you can always spend the day
exploring ancient archaeological sites which are spread across the whole island. Some of the most
famous sites include
Another perfect time-consuming option is to lazily spend the day on one of the many gorgeous beaches
that decorate Lefkas. Because of their impressive landscapes and purity, a vast number of tourists
choose to spend their summer holidays soaking in the sun and freeing their minds on these very
beaches.
If you choose to visit this picturesque island to get to know Greek culture, you definitely made the right
choice. By visiting the more traditional villages across the island, you can experience the true Greek
culture and see some types of architecture no longer used, but which are still inhabited by the Greek
people. This adds to the charm of the place, as building storey blocks is still banned by law.
